Lesson 64: Gideon Sent to Deliver Israel
The Israelites were beginning to worship idols. They knew this was very wrong because they knew there was only one true God. So God let the other nations come into their land and destroy it.
During the lifetime of Gideon the Midianites came into the land and stole everything they could. They took everything that grew in their fields and they took their cattle. The Israelites were afraid of the Midianites.
At this time an angel from God appeared to Gideon. The angel told Gideon to destroy the idols of Baal and God would be with him and save the Israelites from the Midianites. Gideon asked the angel to give him a sign so that he would be sure that God would deliver the Midianites into his hand. Gideon asked the angel if he could put a fleece of wool on the floor at night and when he awakened he wanted the fleece to be wet from the dew but the rest of the ground dry. The angel agreed to this. Gideon knew that only God could do this. You see early in the morning everything on the grouind is wet from the dew. When Gideon awakened he found the wool wet as he asked, and the rest of the ground was dry. Still Gideon wanted another sign. "And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew." (Judges 6:39)" This also happened just as Gideon had asked. So now Gideon knew that God would be with him.
